UAE Pushes Ambitious UN Reforms on 80th Anniversary

Geneva, Switzerland: The UAE’s Federal National Council (FNC) Parliamentary Division has called for wide-ranging reforms to strengthen the United Nations, emphasizing that success should be measured by tangible progress in peace, security, sustainable development, and humanitarian aid, rather than merely through budget cuts.

Speaking at the 151st General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), Dr. Marwan Obaid Al Muhairi, member of the FNC Parliamentary Division, highlighted the UN’s 80th anniversary as a critical moment to boost the effectiveness and relevance of the global body in addressing today’s complex challenges.

Dr. Al Muhairi stressed that reforms should be carried out transparently and inclusively to enhance global confidence in the UN system. During discussions on the UN Secretary-General selection process, the UAE delegation emphasized the need for adherence to the UN Charter, independent leadership, and a clear global vision. Key recommendations included setting timelines for the election process, requiring candidates to present vision statements, encouraging participation of parliaments and civil society, and empowering qualified women leaders through fair opportunities.
