Ricky Ponting, the former Australian captain, has called on supporters and critics alike to remain confident in India's former leaders, Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, after the team's seven-wicket defeat to Australia in the inaugural ODI in Perth. He argues that despite a challenging start, both players possess the expertise and talent necessary to significantly impact India's 50-over campaign leading up to the 2027 World Cup.
The ongoing three-match series moves to Adelaide on Thursday, wrapping up in Sydney on Saturday. Ponting points out that the Adelaide pitch is conducive for batting, yet both players will have to contend with some of the most formidable white-ball bowlers in the sport, posing a tough challenge ahead.
Kohli and Rohit, participating solely in the 50-over format following their Champions Trophy victory earlier this year, faced difficulties in their first outing against Australia; Rohit fell early to Josh Hazlewood, while Kohli was dismissed for a duck by Mitchell Starc. Nonetheless, Ponting urges that their accolades and capabilities should not be overlooked.
Expressing his assurance in their potential for a swift resurgence, Ponting asserted, “You don’t write off champion players ever.” He commended Kohli as one of the finest 50-over players he has witnessed and maintained that both will find ways to contribute in crucial matches, likely securing their spots for the 2027 World Cup.
Former India head coach Ravi Shastri echoed this sentiment, praising Kohli and Rohit for their monumental contributions to Indian cricket over the years. He remarked that their legacy is firmly established, alleviating concerns over their future involvement in the sport. According to Shastri, their stature in both domestic and international arenas is built upon a history of reliable performances.
The forthcoming match in Adelaide is set to challenge the duo's adaptability. Ponting believes that the formidable Australian bowling lineup will offer a rigorous yet beneficial chance for Kohli and Rohit to showcase their skills, resilience, and on-field leadership.
Despite the recent defeat, both Ponting and Shastri concur that Kohli and Rohit are vital assets to India’s ODI team. Their experience, skills, and leadership not only make them crucial figures for this series but also vital for the road ahead, underscoring that even after a rough outing, champions are always primed for a comeback.
