With global demand for air travel on the rise and supply struggling to keep pace, consumers should brace themselves for an increase in ticket prices. The surge in flying, as reported by the International Air Transport Association (IATA), has outpaced the available seat capacity due to production constraints faced by aircraft manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus. Boeing's production of the 737 Max, limited by safety and quality concerns, has fallen short of targets set by the Federal Aviation Administration. Airbus, too, faces challenges in meeting demand due to supply chain constraints and issues with power plants in some of its aircraft.

As airlines grapple with the shortage of new aircraft, the leasing market reflects the desperation to add more planes. Lease rates for popular models like the Boeing 737 Max 9 and Airbus A321-200 have surged to pre-pandemic levels, indicating the intense competition for available aircraft. Airlines are also extending the operational life of existing planes, leading to higher maintenance costs and longer downtimes.
The increase in operating costs for older aircraft, coupled with supply constraints, is expected to prompt airlines to raise airfares to offset these expenses. Despite concerns about a potential economic downturn, passenger demand remains robust, with regions worldwide experiencing a significant rebound in traffic. This sustained growth in demand, combined with limited aircraft supply, suggests that consumers are likely to bear the brunt of rising ticket prices in the near future.
