Mali is witnessing another alarming security crisis after five Indian nationals were kidnapped last week amid growing jihadist violence and unrest. The incident occurred near Kobri, in western Mali, where the victims were employed by a company working on electrification projects.
The Indian Embassy in Bamako confirmed the abduction and stated that it is coordinating closely with Malian authorities and the company to ensure the safe release of its citizens. The kidnapping took place on November 6, but no group has yet claimed responsibility.
Mali, currently under military rule, has struggled to contain unrest linked to criminal gangs and jihadist organizations affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State group. Kidnappings targeting foreigners have become a recurring threat in the country, which has been plagued by coups, economic instability, and armed conflicts since 2012.
The Al-Qaeda-affiliated Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM) has intensified attacks in the Sahel region, targeting highways, fuel convoys, and security forces. In recent months, the group has imposed fuel blockades, severely affecting Mali’s economy and isolating key cities from essential supplies.
JNIM has previously kidnapped foreign nationals for ransom, including two Emiratis and an Iranian near Bamako, who were released after negotiations that reportedly involved at least $50 million. The group’s growing influence across Mali poses heightened risks to aid workers, foreign employees, and industrial projects.
Amid the escalating crisis, countries including the United States, United Kingdom, and Germany have issued advisories urging their citizens to leave Mali due to the unpredictable security situation. The Indian Embassy continues to monitor the situation closely, aiming for the safe return of its nationals.
This latest kidnapping underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Mali’s military rulers in restoring security and stability in the region while combating sophisticated jihadist networks.
