Al Ain — In a landmark cultural initiative, His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohamed bin Zayed presided over the opening ceremony of the inaugural Al Ain Camel Racing Festival, held under the directive of President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan at the majestic setting of Qasr Al Watan. This marks the first festival of its kind in Al Ain, with a clear focus on preserving and celebrating Emirati equestrian heritage.
The event reflects the leadership’s commitment to cultural legacy, blending centuries‑old traditions with modern celebration. Organized by the UAE Camel Racing Federation, the festival brings together dignitaries, tribal elders, camel breeders, and families eager to engage with the nation’s ancestral legacy.
Sheikh Hamdan emphasized that the festival aligns with broader goals of nurturing national identity among younger generations. He underlined that such gatherings serve as living classrooms—where respect for heritage is fostered through experience, rather than formality .
Competitions featured traditional races for purebred Arabian camels, spotlighting the grace and endurance of prized Omani and Sudania breeds. Participants from across the UAE and GCC gathered to showcase their finest animals on the sand track hosted within Al Ain’s cultural precincts. Community participation was high, with families enjoying heritage camps, food, and educational demonstrations complementing the sporting action.
Officials highlighted that camel racing is not just a sport—it’s a pillar of national identity. This festival further enriches Abu Dhabi’s cultural calendar, reinforcing global appreciation of Emirati customs. The UAE Camel Racing Federation cited increased interest from youth and noted that similar efforts during the Al Dhafra Festival have historically boosted breeding standards and tourism engagement in remote communities.

The format echoes earlier successes—such as Al Dhafra—blending competition, heritage displays, and community events. Races are paired with camel beauty contests (mazayna) to encourage preservation of breed quality. This new Al Ain edition is expected to run over several days, laying foundations for a lasting annual celebration of heritage and sport .
Veterans from the camel‑racing sector praised the festival's launch. They highlighted its potential to invigorate regional breeding programs and reenergize rural economies—particularly via ancestral tribal links and family‑driven participation.
As spectacle and culture join, Al Ain Camel Racing Festival enables younger Emiratis to engage directly with tradition—versus watching it from afar. With attendance from high‑ranking officials and broad media coverage, the festival sends a strong message: cultural heritage is alive, cherished, and woven into national evolution.
