ATHENS, Greece — Firefighters are currently engaged in a fierce battle against a wildfire that erupted on the eastern Aegean island of Chios, highlighting the looming threat as Greece’s prime minister, Kyriakos Mitsotakis, issues a stark warning about the upcoming summer season's potential dangers.
The wildfire prompted emergency evacuation orders for residents in the Metohi area of western Chios, urging them to seek safety at a nearby beach. This development follows the successful containment of two major forest fires near Athens just a day earlier, efforts that were challenged by strong seasonal winds.
Addressing the situation during a Cabinet meeting on Monday, Prime Minister Mitsotakis cited the unprecedented weather conditions in June, marked by severe drought and unusually strong winds for the season. These factors have significantly heightened the wildfire risk for the summer ahead.

Mitsotakis emphasized the crucial role of early detection tools such as drones in alerting authorities to wildfire threats promptly. He also praised the enhanced coordination between official firefighting agencies and volunteer firefighters, which has played a vital role in minimizing the extent of fire damage thus far.
"As we enter the critical phase of the fire season, public cooperation remains indispensable, especially in terms of prevention efforts," Mitsotakis emphasized, underscoring the shared responsibility in mitigating wildfire risks.
Last month, both Greece and neighboring Turkey experienced several wildfires fueled by hot, dry weather and strong winds, underscoring the heightened vulnerability of the region. This summer is anticipated to be particularly perilous following a mild and dry winter, which has exacerbated fire conditions.
Last year, Greece witnessed devastating wildfires that claimed over 20 lives, serving as a grim reminder of the potential consequences of uncontrolled blazes in the region.
