A devastating fire erupted late Sunday night at a nursing home in Manado, North Sulawesi, Indonesia, tragically claiming the lives of 16 elderly residents and injuring three others. The flames broke out around 8:30 PM local time and rapidly spread throughout the facility, severely limiting any escape routes.
Responding quickly to emergency alerts, firefighters arrived at the Damai retirement home to find numerous victims trapped in their rooms. It is believed that many of those who perished were resting when the fire began. The fire was brought under control by 9:30 PM.
Local officials reported that the victims' bodies were charred, complicating identification efforts. Authorities are urging family members of the deceased to assist in the identification process since many victims were found in an unrecognizable state.
A nearby resident, Steven Mokodompit, played a key role in aiding the evacuation of nursing home residents. He recounted how the fire originated in the kitchen and rapidly engulfed the building. Steven and others used tables and ladders to help residents escape from the back. They also reported hearing an explosion and cries for help during the incident, highlighting the chaos that unfolded.
Investigators are currently examining the circumstances that led to the fire, as this tragic event emphasizes the heightened risk that elderly individuals face in emergencies, especially in care facilities.
Sadly, fatal fires are a recurring issue in Indonesia. Just this month, a fire in a seven-story office building in Jakarta took 22 lives, raising alarming questions about fire safety measures and emergency preparedness nationwide. This latest incident at the nursing home intensifies the urgency for better safety protocols to safeguard vulnerable populations.
