A sudden fire on a cable bridge in southwest Berlin plunged large parts of the city into darkness, disrupting daily life for tens of thousands of residents and businesses. The incident caused a major power outage, affecting around 50,000 households and nearly 2,000 commercial establishments.
The blaze broke out on a cable bridge crossing the Teltow Canal, a critical point in Berlin’s power network. Several cables linked to the nearby Lichterfelde power station were damaged, leading to an immediate shutdown in supply across surrounding areas. Streets, homes, shops, and offices were left without electricity as emergency services rushed to the scene.
Firefighters managed to bring the situation under control, preventing further spread and limiting additional damage. Once the fire was contained, efforts began to stabilize the network and restore electricity. Power restoration is taking place step by step, with some areas coming back online sooner than others.
As the technical teams worked on repairs, German police confirmed that the cause of the fire is under investigation. Authorities have not ruled out foul play and are treating the case as suspected arson. The announcement was shared publicly as part of an ongoing probe into how such a critical section of infrastructure caught fire.
The outage highlighted the vulnerability of key energy links in a major European capital, as thousands were suddenly forced to cope without power. While electricity is gradually returning, the incident has raised serious questions about infrastructure safety and security in one of Berlin’s busiest districts.
