In a landmark decision, the Faroe Islands have voted to permit abortions up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, marking a departure from one of Europe’s most stringent abortion regulations. The legislation was passed with a close 17–16 vote after a lengthy parliamentary debate on Thursday.
Previously, abortion in the islands was only allowable under very specific circumstances, including cases of rape, incest, or if the mother’s health was compromised. Under the old law from 1956, women faced a cumbersome process needing approval from multiple healthcare professionals, and both patients and medical staff risked legal repercussions for non-compliance.
MP Ingilín Didriksen Strømm, who championed the bill, celebrated the vote as “a truly historic day”, emphasizing the importance of recognizing women’s rights. She stated that the law will ensure “safe healthcare access” and empower women to make personal choices free from fear or societal pressure.
Set to take effect on July 1 next year, this new legislation represents a crucial advancement for the small North Atlantic archipelago, which has a population of approximately 56,000 and is rooted in conservative social norms. While the majority adhere to Lutheran values, previous attempts to amend the laws faced significant obstacles, including a tied vote last year.
Supporters of the change view it as a long-awaited breakthrough. Bjørt Lind from Fritt Val, an advocacy organization, described it as “a colossal change”, highlighting how abortion has historically been a taboo subject in Faroese culture, leaving many women hesitant to share their experiences.
Amnesty International’s branch in the Faroe Islands has also lauded this reform as “a substantial victory for human rights and bodily autonomy”. The organization pointed out that many women had to travel to Denmark for abortions, where regulations are more lenient, due to local limitations.
Across Europe, 43 nations allow abortion on request during early pregnancy, with only a few, such as Malta and Poland, implementing strict laws. The Faroe Islands have been part of this small group.
Skeptics of the new law, like MP Erhard Joensen, argue for the necessity of protecting fetal rights. While he respects the legislation’s passage, he believes many in the community do not support this change and may seek to reverse it eventually.
Despite differing opinions, Thursday’s vote stands as one of the most prominent social reforms in recent Faroese history, embodying a shift towards a more progressive societal outlook.
