Epic Games, the publisher behind the global hit Fortnite, has announced plans to lay off approximately 1,000 employees as part of cost-cutting measures amid ongoing challenges in the gaming industry.
The Cary, North Carolina-based company confirmed the decision in an internal memo shared by CEO Tim Sweeney on Tuesday. The layoffs represent nearly 20% of the company’s workforce, reducing its total employee count to around 4,000.
According to the company, the job cuts are not linked to artificial intelligence. Instead, they are driven by broader industry pressures, including slower growth, reduced consumer spending, and increasing operational costs. Additionally, games like Fortnite are facing intensified competition for user engagement from social media platforms and other digital entertainment options.
Epic Games is also dealing with internal challenges, particularly its gradual return to the mobile gaming market. The company noted it is still in the early stages of rebuilding its mobile presence following high-profile legal disputes with Apple and Google over app store payment policies.
Reflecting on the company’s history, Sweeney emphasized that Epic has navigated major industry transitions before—from the shift to 3D gaming in the 1990s with Unreal, to console success in the 2000s, and the rise of online gaming with titles like Fortnite. However, he described current market conditions as among the most challenging the company has faced in decades.
“This period represents both significant disruption and major opportunity for companies that can successfully adapt,” Sweeney stated.
This marks Epic Games’ second major round of layoffs in recent years. In 2023, the company cut around 830 jobs, accounting for roughly 16% of its workforce at the time.
Despite the challenges, Epic remains focused on restructuring its operations and positioning itself for long-term growth in an evolving digital entertainment landscape.
