In the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2024, England secured their second victory by defeating South Africa by seven wickets in a thrilling match held at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Chasing a target of 125 runs, England's innings was led by the impressive performance of Nat Sciver-Brunt, who scored 48 runs off 36 balls, alongside a solid contribution from Danni Wyatt-Hodge, who added 43 runs off 43 deliveries.
South Africa opted to bat first after winning the toss, and their innings was bolstered by captain Laura Wolvaardt, who scored a commendable 42 runs. All-rounder Marizanne Kapp also played a vital role, contributing 26 runs. Despite a strong start, South Africa faced challenges as England's bowlers tightened their grip, with Sophie Ecclestone shining with figures of 2 for 15 in her four overs.

South Africa started their innings with openers Wolvaardt and Tazmin Brits, who quickly accumulated 31 runs in the first five overs. However, the innings shifted when Brits was caught off Linsey Smith's bowling for just 13 runs at the beginning of the sixth over. Wolvaardt continued to anchor the innings, forging a partnership with Anneke Bosch, who managed to score 18 runs off 26 balls before being bowled by Sarah Glenn.
The turning point for England came when Wolvaardt was dismissed by star spinner Sophie Ecclestone, who bowled her with a delivery that pegged back the middle stump, leaving the Proteas at 79 runs. This wicket was crucial as it ended a promising partnership with Kapp, who later accelerated the scoring with a quick 26 off 17 balls, pushing South Africa past the 100-run mark.
As the innings progressed, England continued to apply pressure, with Charlie Dean claiming the wicket of Chloe Tryon for just 2 runs. Ecclestone added to the wicket tally by bowling out Kapp in the penultimate over. A clever run-out by Nat Sciver-Brunt further dented South Africa's efforts, sending Sune Luus back to the pavilion for 1 run. South Africa managed to finish their innings at 124 runs for 6 wickets in their 20 overs, with Annerie Dercksen remaining unbeaten on 20 runs.
In response, England's innings started cautiously. Openers Maia Bouchier and Wyatt-Hodge faced disciplined bowling from Kapp and Ayabonga Khaka, managing only 8 runs in the first three overs. Kapp then struck in the fifth over, dismissing Bouchier for 8 runs with a leg-before-wicket decision.
To accelerate the scoring, Alice Capsey, who capitalized on a dropped catch, scored 19 runs off 16 balls before being caught and bowled by Nadine de Klerk. This brought Wyatt-Hodge to the crease, and alongside Sciver-Brunt, they formed a strong partnership, accumulating runs steadily through the middle overs.
The pair added 64 runs together before Wyatt-Hodge was stumped off Nonkululeko Mlaba's bowling with just 11 runs required from the final two overs. Sciver-Brunt, however, held her nerve, finishing the innings with a boundary that sealed the victory for England with four balls to spare.
In summary, the match showcased strong performances from both teams, with England successfully chasing down the target of 125 runs set by South Africa. The final scores were South Africa 124/6 in 20 overs and England 125/3 in 19.2 overs, highlighting England's resilience and determination in the T20 World Cup.
