The Environment Agency in Abu Dhabi (EAD) has picked up more than 2,000 tonnes of used bottles since it started the Bottle Return Plan in 2023. This plan helps people give back their empty bottles instead of throwing them away.

In the year 2024, EAD and a company called Sparklo helped collect 23 million used items like plastic bottles and drink cans. This plan is part of Abu Dhabi’s idea to stop the use of plastic that is used only once.
EAD worked with shops like ADNOC, Lulu, and Carrefour and placed more than 100 special machines across Abu Dhabi. These machines, called Sparklomats, take empty bottles and cans from people. This makes it easy for everyone to return and recycle.
Out of the 23 million items collected this year, there were 544,000 kg of plastic and 18,000 kg of aluminium. This saved the air from more than 3.5 million kg of bad gas (CO₂) that harms the earth. One machine even took in over 8,500 items in one day, which is a big record.
Sheikha Mohamed Al Mazrouei, a top member of EAD, said, “We want people in Abu Dhabi to add good habits like recycling to their daily life. This plan shows how working with companies and using new tools can help the earth. It also helps Abu Dhabi stay strong in saving nature.”
Maxim Kaplevich, the head of Sparklo, said, “When recycling is easy and fun, people like to do it. With the help of EAD, we put many machines around Abu Dhabi. This helps the city become cleaner and greener.”
Now, EAD and Sparklo want to add more machines and get more people to join the plan. This will help Abu Dhabi become a smart and clean place for the future.
