DEWA, Sauli Niinistö meet at WGES to boost green economy

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) hosted a high-level meeting with HE Sauli Niinistö, former President of Finland, on the sidelines of the 11th World Green Economy Summit (WGES) in Dubai. HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and MD & CEO of DEWA, welcomed Niinistö following his keynote address at the summit’s opening session.

In his speech, Niinistö emphasised the vital role of strong policies and sustainable financing in advancing the global green economy. He underlined fairness, flexibility and youth participation as crucial elements to ensure future-oriented climate solutions that are inclusive and equitable.

During the meeting, Al Tayer presented DEWA’s pioneering initiatives to diversify clean energy production. He outlined the utility’s strategic focus on photovoltaic solar power, concentrated solar power (CSP) and advanced energy storage systems. A key highlight was the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park — the largest single-site solar park in the world operating on the independent power producer (IPP) model. Once complete in 2030, the park will generate over 8,000 megawatts of clean energy and cut more than 8.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

Al Tayer also shared DEWA’s track record in achieving world-leading performance benchmarks. The authority ranks first globally in 12 key performance indicators, outperforming utilities across Europe and the US. Electricity customer minutes lost in Dubai have been reduced to only 0.94 minutes, while power transmission and distribution losses are down to 2% and water network losses to 4.5% — all among the lowest worldwide.

The meeting underscored Dubai’s growing role in global sustainability efforts, with WGES providing a platform for leaders to collaborate on practical solutions for a greener future.
