Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) recently held a special hackathon with the theme “Generative AI Meets Open Data.” The event gathered more than 70 talented students from different universities and colleges across the UAE. It was a unique platform where young people worked together to design smart ideas that can make future travel in Dubai safer, easier, and faster.

The hackathon was organised by RTA’s Public Transport Agency, with support from its Corporate Technology Support Services Sector and the Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector. To make the event even stronger, RTA partnered with BytePlus, a well-known global technology company famous for creating modern digital tools and solutions.

This gathering was not just a simple competition. It was a space for fresh ideas, teamwork, and the use of real open data to create useful solutions for Dubai’s transport system.

What Was the Aim of the Hackathon?

The main goal of this hackathon was to use open data and artificial intelligence (AI) to solve real-life transport challenges. In simple words, the students were given access to available data and were asked to design AI-powered solutions that could improve mobility across the city.

For RTA, this event was also about listening to young minds outside of their organisation. They wanted to learn how different people, from different backgrounds, think about transport problems. By welcoming such diverse perspectives, RTA hopes to come up with stronger and more creative ideas for the future.

Why Was This Hackathon Special?

Hackathons are normally short, creative events where teams compete by building solutions in a limited time. But this one was unique because:

  • It brought together more than 70 students from many UAE universities.

  • It was focused on generative AI, one of the most advanced forms of artificial intelligence.

  • The students worked with real open data sets that could directly impact transport systems.

  • RTA and BytePlus both guided the students and showed them how their ideas could be turned into reality.

RTA’s Efforts to Support Young Innovators

The Strategy and Corporate Governance Sector at RTA, especially its Innovation and Pioneering Department, played a big role in the event’s success. Their work included:

  • Coordinating with universities, colleges, and start-ups to invite participants.

  • Designing a fair and clear system to evaluate all ideas.

  • Guiding the students during the hackathon, helping them polish their concepts.

  • Ensuring that intellectual property rights were protected by registering the innovative ideas in RTA’s approved systems.

  • Following up on the winning projects to see how they could be used in real RTA operations.

This showed that the hackathon was not just about ideas on paper. It was about taking those ideas forward, testing them, and making them part of Dubai’s future transport plans.

BytePlus and RTA – A Strong Partnership

RTA’s collaboration with BytePlus made the hackathon even more powerful. BytePlus is known for using advanced technology to help organisations grow and serve communities better.

By working together, RTA and BytePlus wanted to highlight the importance of adopting new technologies such as AI. They also wanted to show students how their skills and creativity can be used for the benefit of society.

The level of innovation seen during the event was described as inspiring. Both RTA and BytePlus were impressed with the creative spirit and talent of the students.

How the Hackathon Was Conducted

The hackathon followed a structured process:

  1. Initial Participation: Over 70 students formed teams and began working on their ideas using open data.

  2. Guidance and Mentorship: Experts from RTA and BytePlus guided the teams, answered their questions, and helped them refine their projects.

  3. Selection of Finalists: Out of all the participants, nine teams were shortlisted to advance to the final stage.

  4. Final Presentations: These nine teams presented their projects before a panel of judges. The panel included experts from RTA and its strategic partners.

  5. Evaluation: The projects were carefully reviewed based on clear criteria such as innovation, usefulness, and real-world impact.

Celebrating the Winning Teams

The top three winning teams will be honoured later this month at the Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transport 2025.

This is a big opportunity for the students, as their projects will be presented in front of global experts and innovators. Not only will they receive recognition, but they will also have the chance to:

  • Showcase their ideas at major local innovation events.

  • Partner with RTA in the future to develop and apply their award-winning projects.

  • See their innovations move from paper and prototypes to actual use in Dubai’s transport system.

Why Such Events Matter for Dubai

Dubai is a city that always looks ahead, especially when it comes to transport and technology. By organising hackathons like this, RTA ensures that:

  • Young people feel inspired to join the journey of innovation.

  • Students get real-world experience by working on actual problems.

  • The city benefits from creative ideas that it might not get from within government departments alone.

  • Partnerships with companies like BytePlus bring global knowledge and advanced tools to Dubai.

This event is also in line with Dubai’s larger vision of building smart cities powered by data, AI, and sustainability.

Voices from the Hackathon

Many participants described the hackathon as a life-changing experience. For some, it was their first chance to work with real transport data. For others, it was a chance to see how their classroom learning could be used to solve real challenges faced by society.

RTA representatives praised the students for their creativity, energy, and fresh thinking. BytePlus leaders said they were inspired by how the students used technology to design meaningful solutions.

The Road Ahead

The hackathon may have ended, but its impact will continue. RTA has promised to monitor and follow up on the best ideas. Some of them may be developed further and become part of Dubai’s future transport operations.

By doing so, RTA is not only encouraging innovation but also showing that student ideas can shape the future of a city.

The “Generative AI Meets Open Data” hackathon was more than just a student competition. It was a gathering of bright minds, forward-looking organisations, and innovative technologies.

It proved that when students, government, and technology companies work together, they can create powerful solutions that benefit everyone.

The event also highlighted Dubai’s role as a hub of creativity, innovation, and smart mobility. As the winning teams prepare to showcase their projects at the Dubai World Congress for Self-Driving Transport 2025, the city looks forward to seeing how these ideas will shape the future of travel for millions of people.
