A routine police investigation took a dark turn when officers spotted bones and skulls in a car, leading them to a basement filled with human remains. The suspect, identified as 34-year-old Jonathan Christ Gerlach, is accused of pilfering around 100 sets of human bones from an abandoned cemetery located outside Philadelphia.
This arrest was the result of an extensive investigation into multiple break-ins at Mount Moriah Cemetery, where at least 26 mausoleums and vaults were illegally accessed since early November. Upon searching Gerlach's residence and storage unit, law enforcement uncovered more than 100 skulls, long bones, and even decomposing torsos.
Officials reported some remains were on display, while others were arranged on shelves or left hanging. Jewelry taken from graves was also discovered, as was a pacemaker still attached to a body part.
Gerlach focused his thefts on mausoleums and vaults in the expansive, 160-acre Mount Moriah Cemetery, which holds around 150,000 graves. The area has suffered numerous break-ins, with damaged stonework and forcibly opened vaults exposing older burials.
The investigation intensified as authorities monitored Gerlach’s activities, noting he was often near the cemetery during the thefts. He was apprehended while returning to his vehicle with tools and a burlap bag containing the remains of two children, three skulls, among other bones.
Gerlach admitted to taking about 30 sets of remains and revealed the graves he had violated. The reasons behind this disturbing crime spree remain unknown, prompting ongoing inquiries.
He is currently facing 100 charges each related to abuse of a corpse and receiving stolen property, alongside additional charges like desecrating burial sites, burglary, and theft. Gerlach is being held with a bail set at $1 million.
