Dubai Municipality has achieved significant progress on its major stormwater infrastructure upgrade in Deira, with 36% of the project now completed. The AED 500 million development is part of the wider effort to strengthen the emirate’s drainage and flood management systems.

Project Overview

  • Total project cost: AED 500 million

  • Coverage area: 13 key districts across 4,700 hectares

  • Network expansion: 60 km of stormwater drainage pipelines

  • Current progress: 36% completion (Phase 1)

The project is designed to improve stormwater management capacity and reduce the risk of water accumulation during heavy rainfall events across key urban zones.

Areas Covered

The development spans several important locations, including:
Al Qusais (1 & 2), Oud Al Muteena, Mizhar 3, Al Twar (1 & 3), Muhaisnah 4, Al Nahda 2, Al Qusais Industrial Area 1, Al Garhoud, Casablanca Street, Dubai Airport area, and Al Rashidiya.

Engineering Progress and Infrastructure Works

  • 22 km of drainage pipelines already installed in Phase 1

  • Pipe diameters reaching up to 2.5 metres for high-capacity flow

  • Construction of a new pumping station near Dubai Creek

  • Pumping capacity: up to 8,000 litres per second

Advanced engineering methods are being used to ensure efficient execution while minimizing disruption to residents and businesses.

Part of the Tasreef Programme

The project is a key component of Dubai’s Tasreef Programme, a large-scale initiative to modernize the emirate’s stormwater network with a total investment of AED 30 billion.

Key goals of the programme include:

  • Increasing infrastructure capacity by up to 700%

  • Reducing construction and maintenance costs by 20%

  • Extending the lifespan of drainage networks

  • Enhancing overall climate resilience

Government Vision and Statements

Dubai Municipality leadership emphasized that the project reflects a long-term vision to build a sustainable and future-ready city. The focus remains on improving infrastructure efficiency, supporting urban growth, and ensuring safety during extreme weather conditions.

Officials from the Waste and Sewerage Agency also highlighted that modern engineering solutions are being implemented to improve drainage efficiency, reduce flooding risks, and maintain uninterrupted business activity in key commercial zones.

With steady progress under the Tasreef Programme, Dubai continues to strengthen its stormwater infrastructure, reinforcing its position as one of the world’s most advanced and resilient urban cities.
