Driver Faces Charges Following Fatal Crash Involving Anthony Joshua in Nigeria

Authorities in Nigeria have formally charged a driver linked to British heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua following a tragic road accident in Ogun State, southwestern Nigeria. The charge is for reckless and dangerous driving.

The incident occurred on Monday when 46-year-old Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode was operating a Lexus SUV along the busy Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Joshua was a passenger in the vehicle, accompanied by two pals, Latif Ayodele and Sina Ghami, when their vehicle collided with a stationary truck on the highway.

Emergency responders confirmed that both Ayodele and Ghami lost their lives at the scene due to the severity of the impact, while Anthony Joshua and Kayode suffered minor injuries. After their treatment at the hospital, they were discharged.

Post-discharge, Kayode was detained by police and was charged with reckless and dangerous driving. He has since been granted bail set at five million naira, contingent upon the provision of sureties. Until all bail conditions are satisfied, he remains in police custody.

Initial inquiries from traffic officials suggested that the SUV was traveling at high speeds prior to the crash, and a tyre blowout was also reported, contributing to the loss of vehicle control leading to the subsequent collision.

Following his hospital release, Anthony Joshua, along with his mother, visited a funeral home to pay tribute to his late friends, with arrangements reportedly underway to repatriate their remains to the United Kingdom. Sources indicate that this process might already be completed.

This heartbreaking event has cast a spotlight on road safety issues on Nigeria’s highways, stressing the risks associated with speeding and stationary obstacles. Currently, there have been no updates on Joshua’s whereabouts, nor additional comments from his representatives.
