Sharjah is all set to celebrate its rich marine heritage as the 12th edition of the Dibba Al Hisn Al Maleh and Fishing Festival prepares to open its doors. Scheduled from 28th to 31st August at Al-Hisn Island, the festival promises a unique combination of tradition, culture, and modern economic development. It has been carefully organized to give visitors an immersive experience of the UAE’s longstanding fishing and maritime traditions.
The festival is jointly organized by the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the Dibba Al Hisn Municipality. Officials from both organizations have confirmed that all logistical, operational, and programmatic arrangements are now complete to ensure a smooth and enjoyable event for families, tourists, and the local community.
Celebrating Maritime Heritage
The Dibba Al Hisn Al Maleh and Fishing Festival is more than just a showcase of seafood and fishing. It is a celebration of the UAE’s cultural heritage and a platform to introduce the younger generation to age-old maritime traditions. Visitors can explore how Al Maleh (salted fish) is prepared, learn about traditional salting and canning techniques, and see the use of historic fishing tools that have been passed down through generations.
In addition to workshops on traditional crafts, the festival also includes educational and interactive activities where children and adults can participate in hands-on experiences. These activities are designed to connect families with the region’s maritime history, creating moments for parents and grandparents to share their knowledge and passion with younger members of the community.
Promoting Sustainability and Awareness
The festival goes beyond heritage. It also aims to promote the sustainability of marine resources and raise public awareness about responsible fishing practices. Panel discussions will highlight the importance of protecting marine life and sustaining local fishing industries. Experts and community leaders will engage with visitors, sharing insights into how modern technology and traditional knowledge can work together for a thriving marine environment.
A Rich Program for All Visitors
This year’s festival is organized into several zones to cater to different interests. Key highlights include:
Al Maleh Market: A central marketplace offering a variety of traditional seafood products and fresh local produce.
Exhibition Spaces: Showcasing agricultural products and other traditional items crafted by local families.
Dining Area: Serving authentic traditional cuisine to give visitors a taste of the region’s culinary heritage.
Fishing Technology Pavilion: Displaying advanced fishing boats, engines, and equipment to promote collaboration and innovation in the fisheries sector.
These areas are designed to encourage community interaction while also fostering entrepreneurship among local families and small-scale businesses. The festival provides an opportunity for artisans and producers to showcase their handcrafted goods, supporting the growth of local enterprises.
A Platform for Families and Communities
According to officials, the festival has a strong focus on family participation. The program encourages parents, grandparents, and children to engage together in cultural and recreational activities. This intergenerational approach ensures that traditional knowledge and skills are passed down to future generations, keeping the UAE’s marine heritage alive.
The festival also emphasizes the importance of community engagement and collaboration, offering a space for local families to interact with visitors, artisans, and experts. Through hands-on workshops, cultural performances, and demonstrations, attendees can experience Sharjah’s maritime spirit firsthand.
Sharjah’s Commitment to Heritage and Development
Mohammad Ahmed Amin Al Awadi, Director-General of the Sharjah Chamber of Commerce and Industry, highlighted that the festival reflects the Chamber’s ongoing commitment to celebrating cultural heritage while integrating it into economic activity. He said that the festival not only showcases Sharjah’s rich traditions but also contributes to modern economic development by supporting local industries and tourism.
Similarly, Talib Abdullah Al Yahyai, Director of Dibba Al Hisn Municipality, emphasized the municipality’s role in providing world-class organizational support to ensure a memorable festival experience. He added that the event is designed to foster community connections, provide educational experiences, and promote the sharing of traditional knowledge between generations.
Bringing Tradition into the Modern Era
By combining traditional fishing practices with contemporary activities and technology, the festival acts as a bridge between the past and present. Visitors will find a lively and colorful environment where culture, education, and entrepreneurship come together. From handcrafted goods and authentic food to technological innovations in the fishing industry, the festival showcases the best of Sharjah’s Eastern Region heritage.
The Dibba Al Hisn Al Maleh and Fishing Festival is an annual reminder of the UAE’s commitment to preserving national identity, promoting sustainability, and supporting local communities. It invites everyone to enjoy a festival filled with heritage, learning, and family fun, creating lasting memories and strengthening cultural ties.
