In a recent interview, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris stated that if she were elected president, she would refuse to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin for peace negotiations unless Ukraine was also represented. Harris emphasized the importance of Ukrainian voices in discussions about their future, saying, "Not bilaterally without Ukraine, no. Ukraine must have a say in the future of Ukraine."

This statement aligns with the Biden administration's previous stance, which has dismissed the possibility of engaging in direct talks with Putin. Harris reiterated this position, highlighting the necessity of including Ukraine in any discussions regarding peace to ensure that its interests are prioritized.
Harris took the opportunity to critique former President Donald Trump's approach to the Ukraine conflict, labeling his policies as a "surrender" to Russia's ongoing aggression, which began with the invasion in February 2022. She pointed out that Trump has been vocal in his criticism of the substantial military and financial aid that the U.S. has provided to Ukraine, suggesting that he could quickly negotiate a peace deal with Putin.
"Donald Trump, if he were president, Putin would be sitting in Kyiv right now. He talks about, 'Oh, he can end it on day one.' You know what that is? It's about surrender," Harris asserted. This statement reflects concerns that any potential peace agreement brokered by Trump could lead to Ukraine conceding territories occupied by Russia in the eastern part of the country.
Additionally, Harris addressed Ukraine's aspirations to join NATO, stating that she would approach the matter "if and when it arrives at that point." This indicates her willingness to consider Ukraine's membership in the military alliance but underscores that it is contingent upon future developments in the ongoing conflict.
Harris’s remarks aim to underscore the Biden administration's commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russian aggression while also positioning her candidacy as one that prioritizes international alliances and the sovereignty of nations in conflict.
