A Delta Air Lines plane had to be evacuated at Orlando International Airport on Monday morning after one of its engines caught fire. The flight, number 1213, was getting ready to leave the gate at around 11:15 AM when the fire started, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The airplane, an Airbus A330, was heading to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport. On board were 282 passengers, 10 flight attendants, and 2 pilots. The fire was spotted coming from the tailpipe of one of the engines just as the plane was preparing for takeoff.

As soon as the flight crew noticed the fire, they followed emergency safety rules. They quickly told everyone to evacuate the plane. All the passengers used emergency slides to get off the aircraft safely. Thankfully, no one was hurt during the evacuation.
Videos taken by people inside the plane showed smoke coming out from one of the wings. Other videos shared on social media showed passengers sliding down onto the runway.
“We’re calling the fire trucks right now, we see that,” said an air traffic controller from the airport tower during the emergency.
The cause of the fire is still not known. Delta Airlines said their maintenance team will check the plane carefully, and the FAA is also investigating to find out what caused the fire.
Delta is sending another airplane to take the passengers to their final destination. “We thank our customers for their patience and are very sorry for what happened. Safety is our top priority. We’re working to make sure everyone reaches their destination as soon as possible,” Delta said in a statement.
Other Recent Plane Incidents
There have been a few other airplane accidents this year.
On January 29, a terrible crash happened near Ronald Reagan Airport in Washington, DC. A passenger airplane and a military helicopter collided. Sadly, 67 people died in the accident.
On February 17, a Delta flight from Minneapolis crashed while landing in Toronto. The plane slid off the runway and flipped upside down. Luckily, all 80 people on board survived.
These events show how important safety is in air travel. Thankfully, the quick action by the crew on Delta Flight 1213 helped keep everyone safe.
