New Delhi — Grief and shock poured in from across the world after a car explosion near Delhi’s Red Fort killed nine people and injured at least 20 others on Monday evening. The blast, which occurred near Gate No. 1 of the Red Fort metro station, has been confirmed as a terror attack, according to probe agencies.
The explosion triggered a fire that engulfed several vehicles parked nearby, while shattered glass and twisted metal littered the area. Authorities immediately launched an investigation, placing Delhi’s key landmarks — including metro stations, airports, and government buildings — under high alert.
Home Minister Amit Shah said a Hyundai i20 was involved in the blast. “We are exploring all possibilities and will conduct a thorough investigation,” he stated, adding that CCTV footage from nearby areas will be closely examined.
The United States, United Kingdom, France, Argentina, Sri Lanka, Iran, Morocco, and Australia have all expressed condolences and issued advisories for their citizens in India.
The US Embassy in New Delhi released a statement urging its citizens to “avoid the areas surrounding the Red Fort and Chandni Chowk” and to remain alert. “Our hearts are with those affected by the terrible explosion in New Delhi,” it said, confirming that multiple casualties had been reported.
Similarly, the UK High Commission updated its travel advisory, urging British nationals to follow local authorities’ instructions. “My thoughts are with all those affected by the explosion near the Red Fort,” said Lindy Cameron, British High Commissioner to India.
French Ambassador Thierry Mathou extended condolences “on behalf of the French people and government,” while Argentina’s Ambassador Mariano Caucino expressed solidarity with India, praying for the victims’ families.
Sri Lanka, Morocco, Australia, and Iran also released statements of sympathy, condemning the attack and standing in support of India during this tragic time.
Initial reports suggest the blast may have been planned to coincide with the busy evening rush hour near the iconic monument, one of Delhi’s most crowded areas. Forensic teams and anti-terror units have been deployed to collect evidence from the site.
Officials confirmed that at least eight of the deceased were inside or near the car when the explosion occurred. The victims have yet to be formally identified.
The Delhi Police, National Investigation Agency (NIA), and intelligence units are coordinating efforts to trace the origin of the explosives and any potential terror links.
Following the explosion, security has been ramped up not just in Delhi but across several major cities, including Mumbai, Bengaluru, and Chennai. Authorities have also urged the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity.
As the capital mourns, the attack has reignited discussions about urban security and preparedness in the face of rising global terror threats.
