A devastating fire erupted on Thursday morning at a bustling ski bar in Crans-Montana, a renowned Swiss Alpine destination, tragically killing 40 individuals and leaving many injured. Authorities suspect the flames were sparked by sparklers held too close to a foam ceiling, which is highly flammable.
Social media footage shows partygoers waving sparklers attached to champagne bottles near the foam-covered ceiling, which quickly ignited. Many patrons inside the basement bar remained oblivious to the growing danger and continued to celebrate.
As the fire spread, panic ensued with chaotic scenes of people attempting to escape. Videos depict frantic efforts to break windows, while some burn victims fled into the streets seeking help.
Authorities confirmed that out of 119 survivors, most were in serious condition, suffering from burns and smoke inhalation. Local hospitals faced overwhelming numbers, leading to the transfer of some patients to specialized burn centers across Europe.
Jacques Moretti, the bar owner since 2015, claimed that all safety protocols were implemented; however, investigators are probing if regulations were adequately adhered to.
It remains unclear how many people were inside the bar during the incident. The declared capacity was 300 indoors and 40 on the terrace. Victims included people from Switzerland, France, Italy, Serbia, Belgium, and many other nations. Efforts to identify the deceased and injured are ongoing.
The Crans-Montana community is grappling with the aftermath of this tragedy. Eyewitnesses recounted horrific scenes of severely burned individuals crying out in anguish, calling the incident a catastrophe for the town. Authorities have warned that victim identification may take days, leaving anxious families awaiting news.
