On the night of July 20, something unusual happened at Surat airport. It was around 10 pm when a couple landed in Surat after their flight from Dubai. They were travelling on an Air India flight. Both of them are residents of Gujarat. But what they carried with them shocked everyone at the airport.
Who Noticed Them First?
As they got off the plane, a security officer from the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) noticed something strange about them. This officer was not wearing a uniform because he belonged to the intelligence wing and was on duty in plain clothes to keep an eye on passengers quietly.
He saw that the man and woman were walking in an odd way. Their walking style did not look normal. It seemed like they were having some difficulty. The officer also noticed that both had slight bulges around their stomach area. These bulges did not match their natural body shape. It looked like they were hiding something under their clothes.

What Did the Officer Do?
The CISF officer immediately informed the Customs officials at the airport. Customs officers have the power to check passengers for any goods that are not allowed or for which taxes have not been paid. Acting on the tip-off, Customs officers stopped the couple for checking.
How Was the Checking Done?
First, the officers asked the couple some questions. The man was wearing a shirt and trousers, while the woman was wearing a salwar suit. The officers then did a physical check on both of them to see what they were hiding.
What Did the Officers Find?
During checking, the officers were shocked to see what the couple was carrying. They had hidden a total of 28 kg of gold paste under their clothes. The paste was neatly strapped around their midsections and upper bodies. The woman was carrying 16 kg of gold paste, while the man was carrying 12 kg of gold paste.
Why Gold Paste and Not Solid Gold?
You may wonder why they were carrying gold paste and not solid gold bars or jewellery. Smugglers use gold paste because it is easier to hide. Gold paste is made by mixing gold powder with other materials to make it look like a thick paste. This paste is packed in packets and strapped to the body. After bringing it to India, smugglers use chemicals to extract pure gold from it.
How Much Pure Gold Was There?
Officials said that based on the concentration levels of the paste, the pure gold yield would be more than 20 kg. This means that after removing other materials from the paste, more than 20 kg of pure gold can be obtained.
Why Is This Smuggling Case Important?
A senior official said this is probably the biggest gold smuggling case ever caught in the history of Surat airport. Usually, smugglers try to bring small amounts so that they do not get caught. But in this case, the couple was trying to smuggle a very large quantity at once.
How Did the Officials Catch Them?
This operation shows how well-trained the CISF officers are. The officer noticed their strange walking style and the unnatural bulges on their bodies. This is called behavioural profiling, where security officers observe how people behave, walk, or react. If something looks odd, they check further.
The Customs and CISF teams worked together in this operation. The Customs officers were ready as soon as the CISF intelligence wing alerted them. They stopped the couple without creating panic among other passengers.
Why Do People Smuggle Gold?
Gold is very expensive in India. If people bring gold legally, they have to pay high taxes at the airport. To avoid paying these taxes, some people try to bring gold illegally. They hide it in their clothes, shoes, or luggage. Sometimes they even swallow small gold pieces. This is called gold smuggling. If they get caught, strict action is taken against them, including heavy fines and jail time.
What Will Happen Next?
The couple has been taken into custody. Customs officials are investigating the case further. They want to find out who gave them the gold paste in Dubai, who was going to collect the gold in India, and how long they have been doing this. They will also check if any other people are involved in this smuggling network.
Why Is This News Important for Everyone?
This news is important because it shows how security officers work hard to protect the country’s economy. Smuggling causes a lot of loss to the government because no tax is paid on the goods being brought illegally. The government uses this tax money for building roads, hospitals, schools, and for development works. If smugglers do not pay taxes, the country loses money.
What Did Officials Say About This Case?
One senior CISF officer said, “This operation shows the strong teamwork between CISF and Customs. The intelligence and quick action by our officer helped us catch the couple before they could leave the airport.”
Another official who is investigating the case said, “This is the biggest gold haul in Surat airport’s history. We will find out where this gold was going and who is behind this smuggling network.”
What Can We Learn From This?
We can learn that crime never pays. Even if people think they can outsmart security systems, officers are always alert. The CISF and Customs work day and night to keep airports safe and to stop smuggling activities.
This was a major gold smuggling attempt at Surat airport. Thanks to the alertness of the CISF officer and teamwork with Customs, the illegal gold worth crores of rupees was caught on time. Such news reminds us that honesty is always the best policy, and illegal shortcuts often lead to big problems.
