The brutal rape and murder of a young doctor at a government hospital in Kolkata has sent shockwaves across India. The heinous crime has provoked widespread outrage, with women protesting in the streets and doctors going on strike. As the public grappled with the severity of the crime, numerous pieces of misinformation began to spread online, further compounding the distress surrounding the case.

In the wake of these unsettling developments, several claims circulated on social media have been debunked by the authorities. Here’s a breakdown of the misinformation and the facts as clarified by the Kolkata Police:

Claim 1: Fractures?

Contrary to social media reports, including an Instagram post alleging pelvic girdle fractures, the official autopsy report of the 31-year-old doctor, conducted in the presence of a magistrate and recorded on video, does not mention any fractures. The police have rejected these claims, emphasizing that the social media narratives are inaccurate.

Claim 2: 'Unnatural Death'

The Calcutta High Court has scrutinized the handling of the case, specifically questioning why an unnatural death case was filed initially. The police explained that such cases are standard procedure used to initiate an investigation in the absence of an immediate complaint. This process can evolve into a murder investigation once a complaint is filed or a post-mortem report is completed. Kolkata Police Chief Vineet Goyal clarified that categorizing the death as unnatural is a procedural step, not an attempt to downplay the severity of the crime. The term “unnatural death” encompasses various scenarios including suicides, accidents, and murders.

Claim 3: 150 mg Semen?

Reports suggesting that 150 mg of semen was found in the doctor’s body, implying gang rape, have been disputed by the police. This figure originated from a petition filed by the doctor’s family in the Calcutta High Court but was later dismissed by authorities. Police Chief Goyal denounced these claims, stating that there is no verified evidence to support such a report, and criticized the spread of false information.

Claim 4: Names of Suspects

Social media has also circulated names of individuals alleged to be involved, including some colleagues of the doctor. While it is known that the parents have provided a list of names to the CBI, no official agency has publicly named suspects beyond the arrested civic volunteer. The police emphasize that no suspects have been officially identified except for those already in custody.

Claim 5: Son of a Powerful Politician?

Another rumor suggested that one of the doctor’s junior colleagues is the son of a prominent politician. The police have debunked this, revealing that the individual in question is actually the son of a teacher from Bankura. Such misinformation was likely spread to insinuate undue influence and protection for certain individuals involved in the case.

Additionally, there have been concerns about the leaking of the doctor’s name and an unverified prescription on social media, which violates Supreme Court guidelines regarding the privacy and reporting of sexual assault cases.

The dissemination of these false claims has only served to exacerbate the situation and divert attention from the serious nature of the investigation. The authorities are working diligently to address the crime and ensure justice is served, while also combatting the spread of misinformation.
