OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has praised how fast India is using artificial intelligence (AI). He said India is moving ahead of other countries because of its "big creativity."

On April 2, Altman posted on social media platform X, saying, "What’s happening with AI in India right now is amazing to watch. We love to see the big creativity—India is moving faster than the world."

Soon after his post, Altman shared an AI-made picture of himself dressed as an Indian cricket player. The picture was in the famous art style of Studio Ghibli, a Japanese animation studio.

This kind of AI picture is a new trend on social media. Last week, OpenAI added a new feature in ChatGPT that can create pictures using AI. This feature works with OpenAI’s GPT-4o model. Since then, many people have shared Studio Ghibli-style pictures of themselves, old historical photos, and famous Bollywood movie scenes.

Altman has spoken about India’s AI growth before. When he visited India in February, he said that India is the second-largest market for OpenAI, after the United States.

“India is a very important place for AI. For OpenAI, it is our second biggest market after the US. The number of users here has tripled in the last year. The new things people are making in India with AI are amazing. We are excited to do more in India,” Altman said during his visit.

After Altman’s post, Aakrit Vaish, an adviser to India’s AI mission, said that India may have close to one million people paying for ChatGPT. He said this because India has around 10 million people using ChatGPT daily, while around 20 million people worldwide are paid subscribers.

At the same time, reports say OpenAI is trying to make ChatGPT cheaper for Indian users. The company is talking with Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Platforms to offer ChatGPT at a lower price in India. Right now, ChatGPT costs $20 per month, but OpenAI may reduce it to just a few dollars. If this happens, more people in India will be able to use AI tools easily.
