A truck driver was shot by law enforcement after attempting to ram into the US Coast Guard Base Alameda in California on Thursday night, authorities confirmed. The incident occurred at the San Francisco Bay Area base, a site that had recently witnessed protests against federal immigration enforcement.

According to the US Department of Homeland Security, the driver tried to weaponize his vehicle to target the Coast Guard Base Alameda, prompting multiple warnings from security personnel. When the truck suddenly accelerated backward at high speed toward the base, officers fired defensive live rounds, wounding the driver in the stomach. Officials said the driver is expected to survive and is now being held for a mental health evaluation.

A bystander was struck by debris from the incident but was treated at a hospital and released. No Coast Guard personnel were injured during the alarming attempt. Video from the scene showed a U-Haul truck reversing toward the base, highlighting the potential threat. The company confirmed it is assisting law enforcement with the investigation.

The FBI has launched an investigation into the incident, emphasizing that it appears isolated and that there is no known current threat to the public. Authorities have not disclosed additional details about the driver’s identity or motivations.

The attempt to target the Coast Guard Base Alameda comes amid heightened tensions in the area. Earlier in the day, hundreds of protesters gathered at the base, carrying signs reading “Protect our neighbors” and “No ICE or troops in the Bay,” referring to US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and National Guard activities.

The protests coincided with a federal decision to pause a planned surge of agents in San Francisco, after discussions with local officials and business leaders. The Coast Guard base, located on a 67-acre man-made island in the Oakland Estuary, has been a strategic facility since 2012 and provides essential services for operations along the West Coast.

Authorities stressed that the swift response of law enforcement prevented a potentially deadly attack on the Coast Guard Base Alameda, highlighting the critical importance of security protocols at sensitive federal sites.

The incident has drawn national attention and underscores concerns over the safety of federal installations amid social and political tensions.
