China has commenced significant military drills in the vicinity of Taiwan, simulating operations to capture and blockade crucial areas of the island. This exercise, termed "Justice Mission 2025," involves ground units, naval ships, aerial forces, and missile systems with live-fire engagements.
The drills take place shortly after an $11 billion arms sale by the United States to Taiwan, which incited strong disapproval from Beijing. In retaliation, China has placed sanctions on American defense contractors.
Taiwan’s government has condemned these military exercises, labeling them a breach of international standards. Early Monday, Taiwan's defense forces noted Chinese military aircraft and ships in their waters, prompting them to activate their own military units and missile defenses. Taiwan's military has stressed its readiness to secure the island and its citizens.
According to the Chinese Eastern Theater Command, responsible for the Taiwan Strait operations, these drills are a “shield of justice” aimed at counteracting forces asserting Taiwan's independence. China considers Taiwan an integral part of its territory and maintains a legislative framework justifying military action against any moves towards secession, despite its official stance advocating peaceful reunification.
Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te, who is accused by Beijing of fostering independence, asserts that Taiwan is already a sovereign entity and does not need to declare independence formally. In a recent interview, he highlighted the need to bolster Taiwan’s defenses to deter potential invasions, while promising to uphold the existing status quo and avoid provocations.
Public sentiment in Taiwan indicates a strong preference for maintaining the current situation, with most citizens neither seeking reunification with China nor formal independence from it.
These drills mark the initial major exercises conducted under the oversight of Yang Zhibin, the new Eastern Theater Command chief who took office in October. Since 2022, China has intensified military activities near Taiwan, often in response to what it views as threats, such as visits from foreign dignitaries or significant political events in Taiwan.
Taiwan also regularly conducts military drills to ready its populace and showcase its defensive capabilities, with this year's Han Kuang exercises being the largest and longest recorded. Additionally, Taiwan is investing in new defense systems, including a sophisticated dome-shaped air defense mechanism.
The rising military tensions surrounding Taiwan are affecting diplomatic relations in the region, especially with Japan. Recent remarks from Japanese officials suggesting that Japan’s Self-Defense Forces might intervene if China were to attack Taiwan have strained ties and led to diplomatic protests between the two countries.
