China has issued a strong warning to the United States, urging it not to use other nations as a justification to assert its interests in Greenland, as tensions escalate regarding the future of this Arctic territory. This statement follows remarks from U.S. President Donald Trump, who reiterated his desire for the U.S. to take control of Greenland, claiming it’s essential to counter Chinese and Russian influence in the region.
During a routine press briefing in Beijing, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that China’s activities in the Arctic adhere to international law and are geared towards promoting peace, stability, and sustainable development. She stated that the U.S. should not cite China or any other country as a “pretext” for advancing its own objectives.
Greenland is a self-governing territory under Danish control, which is a NATO member. Trump has consistently argued that Greenland is critical for U.S. security due to its strategic Arctic location and has even suggested that military force could be considered, although he maintains that negotiations would be preferred.
These comments have sparked significant alarm within Denmark and Greenland. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen cautioned that a U.S. acquisition of Greenland could jeopardize NATO's cohesion. Leaders in Greenland have also voiced their concerns, asserting that their future should be determined by their population. In a collective statement, Greenland’s political leaders emphasized their demand for respect from the United States and called for an end to perceived disdain toward their nation.
Over the weekend, Trump reiterated his position, stating the U.S. must “take Greenland” or face losing it to other powers. His statements have intensified the existing diplomatic strain among Washington, Copenhagen, and Nuuk, the capital of Greenland.
At the same time, China has been increasingly focusing its attention on the Arctic in recent years. In 2018, Beijing referred to itself as a “near-Arctic state,” unveiling plans for a “Polar Silk Road” as part of its Belt and Road Initiative, raising alarms in the U.S. and Europe regarding China’s long-term ambitions in the area.
Responding to U.S. assertions that Greenland should be taken to counter China, Mao Ning asserted that all nations have the right to engage in Arctic activities in compliance with international law. She highlighted that the Arctic’s significance is global, impacting more than just a single country.
Danish and Greenlandic officials are anticipated to visit Washington this week to deliberate on this matter, and U.S. lawmakers are also organizing trips to Denmark. As discussions progress, the question of Greenland has emerged as a significant challenge in diplomacy, international law, and respect for the sovereignty of smaller states.
