China has strongly criticized recent remarks made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi regarding Taiwan, saying they are harming China-Japan relations and threatening economic cooperation between the two countries.

The comments, which included suggestions of possible military involvement in the Taiwan Strait, have caused widespread backlash in China. Officials said Takaichi’s statements undermine the political foundation of China-Japan relations and could have serious negative effects on trade and business exchanges.

At a press briefing on Thursday, He Yongqian, a spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Commerce, urged Japan to act responsibly, withdraw the remarks, and fulfill its commitments to China. She said, “If Japan continues down the wrong path, China will take necessary measures, and all consequences will be borne by Japan.”

The spokesperson also responded to reports suggesting China might suspend imports of Japanese aquatic products, saying she had no information to confirm such measures. However, she emphasized that the Japanese prime minister’s statements have caused strong public outrage in China.

China warned that Japan cannot expect to damage Chinese sentiment while continuing to seek economic benefits. “This is not the right way to deal with China,” the spokesperson added, urging Japan to correct its actions immediately.

Takaichi’s remarks have drawn global attention and criticism for reviving fears of militarism in the region and increasing tensions in the Taiwan Strait, a sensitive area for both regional security and international trade.

China’s reaction highlights growing sensitivities over Taiwan and the importance of maintaining stable diplomatic and economic relations between Beijing and Tokyo.
