Missiles: China’s Strategic Power
One of the main highlights of the parade was China’s display of nuclear-capable missiles. For the first time, China publicly showed its "triad" of nuclear-ready missiles, meaning weapons that can be launched from land, sea, and air. These missiles represent the core of China’s strategic power, designed to safeguard the country’s sovereignty and national pride.
Air, Land, and Sea-Based Missiles
Jinglei-1: A long-range missile launched from aircraft, capable of striking distant targets.
Julang-3: A submarine-launched intercontinental missile that strengthens China’s ability to respond to threats from the sea.
Dongfeng-31 and Dongfeng-61: Land-based intercontinental missiles forming the backbone of China’s nuclear defense.
These missiles are considered China’s “ace” weapons, forming the country’s main deterrent against any potential threats.
Advanced Missile Systems
The parade also displayed the Dongfeng-5C (DF-5C) missile, part of a program that began in the 1970s. This liquid-fueled missile can carry multiple independent warheads and strike several targets at once.
China also showcased hypersonic anti-ship missiles like Yingji-17, Yingji-19, and Yingji-20. These missiles have been tested against models of U.S. aircraft carriers, showing their high speed and precision.
Other missiles on display included:
Medium-range surface-to-air missiles such as HQ-16
Cruise missiles like Changjian-20A, Changjian-1000, and Yingji-18C
Hypersonic missiles including Yingji-21, Dongfeng-17, and Dongfeng-26D, which the Chinese state media claimed are equipped for “all-weather combat.”
These weapons reflect China’s focus on advanced missile technology to maintain security and power projection.
Laser Weapons: Fighting Drones
In addition to missiles, China displayed laser weapons developed to defend against drone attacks. The parade included:
Missile guns
High-energy laser weapons
High-power microwave weapons
State media referred to this combination as a “triad” of anti-drone defenses, showing China’s focus on modern threats and innovative defense systems. These weapons can target drones with precision, providing protection against aerial attacks.
Drones: Air and Sea Capabilities
China’s drone technology was also a major feature of the parade. The country displayed drones capable of operating both underwater and in the air. These drones serve multiple purposes:
Reconnaissance: Observing and collecting information about enemy positions.
Attack missions: Striking targets with precision.
Naval operations: Unmanned helicopters designed to be launched from ships.
The sea-based systems included not only drones but also submarines, surface vessels, and a mine-laying system. These additions reflect China’s ability to extend its military operations across different environments, including oceans and rivers.
The parade included the unmanned operations group of the People’s Liberation Army, who demonstrated the drones during the event. This display highlighted the growing importance of unmanned technologies in modern warfare.
Significance of the Parade
The parade marked the 80th anniversary of the end of World War Two, a significant milestone for China. Beyond commemorating history, it served as a platform to showcase China’s military advancements and to signal the country’s growing global influence.
The event also demonstrated the modernization of the People’s Liberation Army, which now possesses a combination of advanced missiles, laser systems, and drones. These technologies reflect China’s emphasis on protecting its sovereignty and maintaining a credible deterrent against potential adversaries.
China’s military parade in Beijing offered a rare public look at some of the country’s most advanced weapons, from nuclear-capable missiles to drones and laser systems. The parade highlighted the growing strength of the People’s Liberation Army and China’s ability to operate far beyond its borders.
By displaying these powerful systems, China sent a clear message about its readiness to defend its national interests and maintain regional and global influence. The parade emphasized not just historical remembrance but also a future where China aims to be a major global military power.
This carefully planned display of advanced military technology shows that China is investing heavily in modernizing its armed forces, ensuring they are prepared for future challenges in land, sea, and air combat.
