China is rapidly replacing diesel trucks with electric models, a shift that could have profound implications for global fuel demand and the future of heavy transport. Once almost entirely reliant on diesel, China’s trucking sector is embracing electrification faster than industry analysts had anticipated.
According to data from Beijing-based Commercial Vehicle World, battery-powered trucks accounted for 22% of new heavy truck sales in the first half of 2025, up from just 9.2% in the same period in 2024. British research firm BMI forecasts that electric trucks could reach nearly 46% of new sales this year and 60% in 2026.
Heavy trucks are critical to modern economies, transporting goods across vast distances. At the same time, they are significant contributors to carbon emissions. Road freight accounted for one-third of all transport-related carbon dioxide emissions in 2019, making the electrification of trucks an urgent priority in efforts to combat climate change.
The transition to electric trucks has been challenging due to the heavy batteries they require, which reduce cargo capacity compared to diesel trucks. Liquefied natural gas (LNG) trucks have been promoted as a cleaner alternative during this transition, but analysts note that electric models are rapidly overtaking LNG in sales. Electric trucks now outsell LNG trucks in China, a trend likely to cut demand for both diesel and imported LNG in the years ahead.
Lower prices, government incentives, and improvements in infrastructure have driven the electric truck boom. Early adopters benefited from a 2024 scheme that provided up to $19,000 for truck owners to trade in old vehicles for electric replacements. Additionally, logistics hubs in the Yangtze River Delta, Beijing, and Shanghai have developed heavy-duty charging stations capable of fast charging trucks, while battery-swapping networks by CATL now cover major expressways.
Despite higher upfront costs—electric trucks can be two to three times more expensive than diesel models—their energy efficiency and lower operating costs offer lifetime savings of 10% to 26%, according to Chinese researchers. Fleet operators, especially those driven by bottom-line considerations, are increasingly opting for electric trucks.
China’s efforts also have a global dimension. The country, already the largest exporter of passenger cars, is expanding into the electric heavy-duty truck market. Exports of Chinese electric trucks to the Middle East, North Africa, Latin America, and the United States have surged in recent years, with plans to enter European markets by 2026. Companies like BYD and Sany Heavy Industry are leading the charge, with new manufacturing facilities being developed in Hungary and other strategic locations to meet international emission standards.
The shift is already reducing diesel consumption. In June 2024, diesel use in China fell to 3.9 million barrels per day, down 11% year-on-year—the largest drop since mid-2021. Analysts from the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis suggest diesel demand in China may decline faster than previously expected, and that LNG trucking may never gain the same global foothold outside of China.
Experts see China’s electric truck growth as a pivotal yet under-reported story in the global energy transition. With the country setting new vehicle emission standards and targeting greenhouse gas reductions, companies relying solely on fossil-fuel vehicles will face mounting regulatory pressures. Meanwhile, international automakers like Volvo and Scania are observing China’s electrification surge, recognizing the competitive and environmental pressures it introduces.
China’s electrification of its heavy transport sector represents more than an environmental effort; it is reshaping the economics of trucking, fuel consumption, and global trade. As battery technology advances, infrastructure expands, and international markets open to Chinese electric trucks, the diesel-powered transport industry may face a structural decline. Analysts predict this shift will not only redefine China’s domestic market but also have lasting impacts on fuel imports, emissions targets, and the global transport industry.
The electric truck revolution is here, and China is leading the charge, signaling a major turning point in the global movement toward cleaner, sustainable, and efficient transport.
