On Friday, China declared sanctions against 20 American defense firms and 10 top executives in retaliation for the US greenlighting a significant arms sale to Taiwan. Beijing denounced this US action as a breach of the “one-China principle” and existing bilateral agreements between the two nations.

According to the Chinese Foreign Ministry, this decision aligns with its Anti-Foreign Sanctions Law and will be enacted immediately. The ministry cautioned that entities participating in arms transactions with Taiwan will incur harsh penalties. Beijing perceives these sales as an infringement on its domestic matters and a risk to its sovereignty.

Notable firms affected include Northrop Grumman Systems Corporation, L3Harris Maritime Services, and Boeing's St. Louis branch, among others. The sanctions will lead to the freezing of all assets, both movable and immovable, of these companies within Chinese jurisdiction. Additionally, Chinese individuals and organizations are barred from engaging with these sanctioned firms.

The list of sanctioned executives features Palmer Luckey, founder of Anduril Industries, plus senior leaders from L3Harris and VSE Corporation. These individuals will encounter asset restrictions and limitations on their China-related activities.

This announcement follows the US government's approval of an arms package to Taiwan exceeding $11 billion, which comprises medium-range missiles, howitzers, drones, and advanced weapons systems. Taiwan has earmarked five of these arms packages as part of a defense budget of approximately $39.85 billion that awaits legislative approval.

China reiterated that its commitment to protecting national sovereignty should not be underestimated, pledging a robust response to any provocations regarding Taiwan.
