In a recent development, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi has made headlines by asserting that China played a significant role in mediating peace between India and Pakistan during a tumultuous military standoff. This assertion comes on the heels of US President Donald Trump's earlier claims of having facilitated peace in the same context.
At a prominent international relations symposium in Beijing, Wang Yi indicated that China's commitment extends beyond just India-Pakistan tensions to include various global conflicts. He remarked, "Our approach has enabled us to mediate sensitive issues such as the tensions between India and Pakistan, conflicts in northern Myanmar, the Iranian nuclear issue, Palestine-Israel tensions, and the recent Cambodia-Thailand border clashes."
However, India has categorically rejected the notion of any third-party mediation regarding its ongoing conflict with Pakistan. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs reaffirmed that the ceasefire, which put an end to clashes occurring from May 7 to 10, resulted from direct talks between the military operations chiefs of both countries. They highlighted that the agreement was actually concluded via a phone call on May 10, underscoring no external influence in the matter.
China’s connection to the issue has been contentious, particularly concerning its military aid to Pakistan. It has been reported that China accounts for over 81% of Pakistan's military equipment. India has accused Beijing of using the recent military operations as a tactical “live lab,” referring to ancient Chinese strategies employed to undermine India by backing Pakistan.
On the diplomatic side, China has urged both India and Pakistan to exercise restraint during the crisis, showing sorrow over India's airstrikes while simultaneously condemning terrorism. This stance represents the delicate balance China attempts to maintain between its close affiliation with Pakistan and its relations with India.
Despite these tensions, there are signs of positive developments in Sino-Indian relations. Wang Yi indicated that China had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit, emphasizing the ongoing positive momentum and collective aspirations for the region.
Furthermore, Wang Yi addressed issues related to the strained China-US relationship, critiquing the unilateral tariffs imposed by the United States, which he argued disrupts global trade and economic order. He reiterated the necessity for dialogue and cooperation, urging both nations to engage with mutual respect in order to positively shape global history.
