Dublin, Ireland — Catherine Connolly has officially been inaugurated as the 10th President of the Republic of Ireland, marking the beginning of a new chapter in the country’s political and social journey. Speaking during her inauguration ceremony at Dublin Castle, Connolly pledged to “nurture and hear all voices” as she assumes the nation’s highest office.
The 68-year-old president succeeds Michael D. Higgins, whose 14-year tenure came to an end at midnight. Connolly, who won a landslide victory in late October over Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys, has promised a presidency focused on inclusivity, unity, and dialogue across the island of Ireland.
In her inaugural address, President Connolly reflected on Ireland’s evolving identity, describing the nation as one that has undergone “seismic changes since the end of the Cold War.” She emphasized her commitment to promoting understanding and dialogue, particularly between communities north and south of the border.
“I look forward to my first visit to Northern Ireland as President,” she said. “Our actions today will shape the world our grandchildren will inherit.”
Connolly also praised the Good Friday Agreement, calling it a model of peaceful conflict resolution that continues to inspire democratic societies worldwide.
The inauguration, held in St Patrick’s Hall at Dublin Castle, was attended by a distinguished audience including former presidents Mary Robinson and Mary McAleese, as well as former Taoiseach Leo Varadkar and current Taoiseach Micheál Martin.
Connolly took her oath of office before Chief Justice Donal O'Donnell and received the Presidential Seal, formally assuming her duties as head of state. Although largely ceremonial, the role of president carries significant symbolic weight in representing the unity and moral conscience of the nation.
During the event, Northern Ireland’s First Minister Michelle O’Neill and Sinn Féin president Mary Lou McDonald were also in attendance. However, a light-hearted moment occurred when Connolly accidentally referred to O’Neill as “Michelle Smith” during her speech, a slip that drew smiles across the hall.
Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly did not attend, citing prior commitments for Remembrance Day in Belfast and Windsor. Despite her absence, she extended her best wishes to the new president, expressing hope for a future meeting.
While some unionist representatives were unable to attend due to scheduling conflicts, Ulster Unionist Party MLA Steve Aiken represented his party at the ceremony, emphasizing that the absence of other unionists was “not a snub.”
“I’m here as a unionist to show respect due to the President,” Aiken said. “It’s important to acknowledge the significance of this moment for Ireland.”
Following the ceremony, Connolly and her husband Brian McEnery traveled in a ceremonial motorcade to Áras an Uachtaráin, the official presidential residence. Later that evening, she attended a state reception at Dublin Castle as the guest of honour.
On Wednesday, the newly sworn-in President is scheduled to visit a gaelscoil in Dublin, a family resource centre in County Meath, and a nursing home in County Galway — early gestures that reflect her promise to stay connected with communities nationwide.
Connolly, who has served as a TD (member of parliament) since 2016, has also worked as a barrister and psychologist. Her elevation to the presidency will now trigger a by-election in Galway West, the constituency she represented in the Dáil.
As Ireland embarks on this new era under President Catherine Connolly, her message of compassion, inclusion, and unity appears set to define her time in office — one focused on bridging divides and ensuring every voice across the island is heard.
