Ottawa: A wave of violence has struck Ontario’s film scene after Film.ca Cinemas in Oakville became the target of two separate attacks, forcing the theatre to pull Indian movies from its lineup.
The first incident happened on September 25, when two masked suspects attempted to set fire to the theatre’s entrance using red gas cans. Security footage showed a grey SUV circling the building before the men returned with flammable liquid and ignited a blaze. Police confirmed the fire caused moderate exterior damage but did not spread inside.
Barely a week later, on October 2, the theatre was attacked again—this time by gunfire. At around 1:50 am, a suspect opened fire at the entrance doors before fleeing. Authorities described him as a heavy-set male dressed in black with a face covering.

Investigators believe both incidents were targeted but have not confirmed a motive. While some community sources suggested links to Khalistani extremist activity in the region, police have not attributed the attacks to any group.
In response to the escalating violence, Film.ca Cinemas cancelled screenings of Rishab Shetty’s Kantara: A Legend Chapter 1 and Pawan Kalyan’s They Call Him OG, noting the risks tied to South Asian movie showings. “We must take every precaution to protect our community,” the theatre said in a statement.
The move quickly rippled across Ontario. York Cinemas, another popular theatre in the Greater Toronto Area, also announced it would suspend all Indian films “until further notice” to ensure staff and guest safety. Advance ticket purchases are being refunded.
The cancellations mark a major setback for Indian cinema screenings in Canada, where South Asian films regularly attract large audiences. For now, theatre websites show no upcoming Indian titles, reflecting growing concerns after two chilling attacks in less than a week.
