US lawmakers in Kansas are proposing a solution to enhance school safety amidst a concerning increase in shootings nationwide. They're considering the use of AI-powered camera systems to detect firearms on school premises. This technology, developed by ZeroEyes, would issue alerts for verification by former law enforcement or military personnel before notifying authorities.
This initiative follows a disturbing trend of school shootings, with the years 2021, 2022, and 2023 witnessing the highest numbers since 2008. In 2023 alone, there were at least 82 incidents, and 2022 saw 46 fatalities, according to CNN reports.
Kansas legislators are contemplating offering grants of up to $5 million to schools to install these AI-backed cameras, pending approval from Governor Laura Kelly. Schools must meet specific criteria, including using patented technology, meeting security standards, and having the capability to detect firearms effectively.

ZeroEyes' technology, born out of the tragic Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School shooting, is already being implemented in states like Michigan and Utah. Similar legislation is underway in Florida, Iowa, Colorado, Louisiana, and Wisconsin, with Missouri recently approving $2.5 million for schools to purchase ZeroEyes' system.
In light of high-profile incidents like the Virginia Tech massacre and the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting, the adoption of AI camera systems is seen as a proactive measure for early threat detection and prevention. However, the Kansas legislation awaits the governor's approval.
ZeroEyes' technology functions by analyzing live video feeds from existing security cameras for firearm detection. Once a potential firearm is spotted, a technician verifies the image, and if confirmed, alerts school administrators and law enforcement within seconds, providing crucial details for an appropriate response.
