In March, authorities discovered the body of a first-year Indian student at the University of Massachusetts, investigating the tragic incident as an apparent suicide. It's suspected that the 20-year-old was engaged in the notorious "Blue Whale Challenge," an online game widely referred to as the “suicide game.”
The Blue Whale Challenge, originating in Russia, gained notoriety for its sinister and potentially deadly nature. Players, known as participants, are assigned a series of tasks or dares by a curator over a period of 50 days. These challenges begin innocuously but gradually escalate to increasingly dangerous and macabre acts, including self-harm and, ultimately, suicide.

Initial tasks may seem harmless, such as waking up in the middle of the night or watching a scary film. However, as the game progresses, participants are coerced into completing more perilous challenges, like standing on the ledge of a tall building or self-inflicting harm, such as carving a whale into their arm. The final task, tragically, involves the participant taking their own life.
Participants often find themselves compelled to complete these tasks due to coercion, threats, blackmail, or psychological manipulation from the curator overseeing their progress. The game's name is derived from the behavior of blue whales, known to intentionally beach themselves, often resulting in their demise.
The Blue Whale Challenge gained international attention in 2019 when reports surfaced linking it to numerous deaths by suicide in various countries, including Russia, Ukraine, India, and the United States.
The genesis of the Blue Whale Challenge's narrative can be traced back to the tragic case of Rina Palenkova, a teenage girl from Russia. On November 22, 2015, Palenkova posted a selfie online, showing herself outdoors with a black scarf obscuring her mouth and nose, and her middle finger covered in dried blood. The caption accompanying the photo read, "Nya bye." Palenkova died by suicide the following day, marking the beginning of the game's dark notoriety.
