Bihar’s political landscape witnessed a dramatic turn on Saturday as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) suspended former Union Minister R K Singh and BJP MLC Ashok Agarwal over alleged anti-party activities. The move comes just a day after the party emerged as the single largest in the 2025 Bihar Assembly elections, winning 89 seats.
According to official letters shared with the leaders, the suspensions were prompted by their continued cross-party rhetoric and actions deemed harmful to party discipline. Both Singh, a former BJP MP from Arrah, and Agarwal have been given a one-week window to clarify their positions and submit formal replies to the party leadership.
The suspension has been linked to actions during the recent Bihar polls. In October, ahead of the elections, Singh publicly urged voters on Facebook not to support leaders with criminal backgrounds. His post notably included several NDA candidates, including JD(U)’s Anant Singh and BJP’s Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Samrat Choudhary. Party insiders say Singh’s allegations against fellow leaders, particularly within his own party, triggered disciplinary action.
The official suspension letter addressed to Singh read: “Your activities are against the party. This falls under violation of party discipline. The party has taken this matter seriously, and it has caused harm to the party. Therefore, as per instructions, you are being suspended from the party and asked to explain why you should not be expelled. You are hereby directed to clarify your position within one week of receiving this letter.”
BJP’s move highlights its strict approach to internal discipline, especially following its strong performance in Bihar. Analysts note that while the party celebrated electoral success, managing internal dissent and maintaining organizational unity remain critical challenges.
Ashok Agarwal, the BJP MLC also suspended, faces similar allegations of anti-party conduct, though specific incidents were not detailed. Both leaders’ responses in the coming week are expected to influence their future within the party.
This suspension comes at a sensitive time as the BJP consolidates power in Bihar and navigates alliances with the NDA. The party’s swift action signals a zero-tolerance stance on public dissent, particularly from senior leaders, ensuring that internal disagreements do not overshadow its electoral victories.
The coming days will reveal whether Singh and Agarwal comply with the party’s directive or escalate the matter, potentially impacting BJP’s cohesion in the state.
