President Joe Biden is considering offering green cards to up to 4,000 undocumented immigrants who are currently facing deportation. However, there are specific conditions attached to this proposal. These immigrants must have resided in the United States for at least a decade and have not been convicted of serious crimes. Additionally, they must demonstrate good moral character and prove that they would suffer exceptional and extremely unusual hardship if deported.
This proposal was initially floated by the Justice Department's Executive Office for Immigration Review in September of last year. It aims to provide lawful permanent residency to thousands of migrants who meet the eligibility criteria. However, the process could take years, as immigrants would have to wait for an immigration judge to approve their application.
President Biden has been taking executive actions to reverse some of the immigration policies implemented during the previous administration, including the "Remain in Mexico" program. This latest proposal is seen as part of his broader efforts to reform the immigration system and provide relief to undocumented immigrants who have been living in the United States for an extended period.
The issue of illegal immigration has been a contentious topic, with a record number of migrants crossing the border into the US each year. The Biden administration's expansion of humanitarian parole has led to an influx of migrants from countries like Cuba, Haiti, Nicaragua, and Venezuela. However, this approach has also faced criticism, particularly in cases where undocumented immigrants have committed crimes after entering the country illegally.
For the Indian community, Biden's immigration policies have been a source of concern. Many Indian professionals face long waits for visa approvals, while some resort to illegal means to enter the country. The backlog in the visa process has created significant challenges for skilled Indian professionals seeking to work in the US. This disparity has led to frustration and calls for reforms to address the immigration system's shortcomings.
