Australia emerged victorious in the concluding Ashes Test against England on Thursday, winning by five wickets and wrapping up a remarkable 4-1 series win. This match served as a poignant farewell for Usman Khawaja, who concluded his illustrious international career after 88 Test matches.
In pursuit of a 160-run target set by England, Australia's innings witnessed some early jitters as five wickets were lost in their run chase. However, they managed to secure the win post-lunch on day five, with critical innings from Cameron Green, who finished not out with 22 runs, and Alex Carey, who chipped in with 16 runs.
The Australian side faced a challenging start, as openers Travis Head and Jake Weatherald scored 29 and 34 runs respectively before falling. Captain Steve Smith contributed 12 runs, while Khawaja's last innings ended at just six runs.
Marnus Labuschagne proved pivotal in the run chase, scoring 37 runs after being reprieved on 20. Unfortunately, he ran himself out at a crucial moment when Australia was at 121 for five, giving England a glimmer of hope.
Despite these hurdles, Australia's path to victory was largely secure. England's first innings featured Jacob Bethell’s impressive 154 runs, yet they were ultimately dismissed for 342 runs, which was insufficient to challenge Australia’s dominance throughout the series.
The Ashes series highlighted Australia’s consistent prowess with both bat and ball, culminating in this final match victory. Usman Khawaja, having announced his retirement prior to the test, received an emotional send-off from teammates and fans, celebrating a career defined by resilience and numerous contributions to the sport.
