Pakistan President Asif Zardari is set to make a historic announcement, formally recognizing his daughter, Asifa Bhutto, as the country's First Lady, according to sources reported by ARY News. This unprecedented move deviates from the traditional practice of appointing the President's wife to the role.
The elevation of Asifa Bhutto to the prestigious position of First Lady marks a significant milestone in Pakistan's political history. President Zardari is expected to officially declare Asifa Bhutto Zardari as the First Lady, granting her the corresponding protocol and privileges.
This decision is noteworthy as Asifa Bhutto will become the first daughter of a president to hold the title of First Lady. Following the announcement, Asifa Bhutto Zardari will assume the responsibilities and honors associated with the position.
The development comes after the swearing-in of Asif Zardari as the 14th President of Pakistan for a historic second time on Sunday. Notably, Zardari is the sole civilian candidate to be elected head of state twice, excluding military leaders. He previously served as Pakistan's President from 2008 to 2013.
Zardari secured 411 electoral votes, defeating his opponent Mehmood Khan Achakzai, the chief of the Pashtoonkhwa Milli Awami Party, who garnered 181 votes, as reported by the Election Commission of Pakistan.
Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa administered the oath to Zardari at the President's House in Islamabad, with newly elected Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and outgoing President Arif Alvi present. Also in attendance were Chief of Army Staff General Asim Munir, Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee General Sahir Shamshad Mirza, and PPP Chief Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.
Zardari's completion of two five-year constitutional terms makes him one of the four democratically elected presidents to achieve this milestone, as reported by Dawn.
