Apple Plans Big iPhone Shake-Up With Foldables in 2026

Apple is preparing for one of the most ambitious transformations in its iPhone history, promising not only new designs and features but also a complete rethink of its product release strategy. After years of following a rigid annual launch cycle, the tech giant is shifting toward a more flexible schedule that could redefine how fans anticipate new iPhones.

The change began with the September launch of the iPhone Air and redesigned iPhone 17 Pro models. These releases marked the start of a three-year evolution that will culminate in cutting-edge devices, including Apple’s first foldable iPhone in 2026 and a high-end curved-glass model with an under-screen camera in 2027.

Staggered Release Strategy

For over a decade, Apple’s fall launch events were a predictable highlight for consumers and investors alike. But packing all major releases into a single season strained engineering teams, suppliers, and revenue potential. Beginning in 2026, Apple plans to split launches into two phases: premium models like the iPhone 18 Pro, Pro Max, and foldable devices will debut in the fall, followed six months later by mid-tier models such as the iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and possibly an updated iPhone Air. This staggered approach could see Apple releasing up to six iPhones per year, ensuring a smoother rollout for both production and consumers.

iPhone Air: A Stepping Stone

The iPhone Air, introduced this year, was never expected to be a blockbuster. Analysts estimate it will account for only 6–8% of Apple’s new iPhone sales, similar to the older iPhone 16 Plus. Instead, the device serves as a testbed for miniaturization technologies that will power future foldable models. The second-generation Air, expected in 2026, will feature a highly efficient 2-nanometer chip, but no major design overhaul.

Shifting Focus Across Apple’s Ecosystem

The overhaul is not limited to iPhones. Apple is gradually repositioning its Mac lineup, with the Mac Studio emerging as the long-term pro desktop solution while Mac Pro updates are being pushed back until the M5 Ultra chip launch. Tesla, too, will finally integrate Apple CarPlay, bridging its EV ecosystem with iPhone users.

Internally, Apple is navigating a leadership transition as Jeff Williams, long-time COO, steps down. Responsibilities are being redistributed among senior leaders, signaling one of the company’s most significant executive shifts in years.

As Apple expands its iPhone lineup, introduces foldables, and reorganizes its leadership, it is clear the company is preparing for a more dynamic and technologically ambitious future — one that keeps the iPhone at the center while broadening its innovation horizon.
