In a landmark security move, the Jammu & Kashmir government has classified all routes to the sacred Amarnath cave shrine as no-fly zones, effectively suspending helicopter services for this year’s pilgrimage. This unprecedented step is part of enhanced measures following the April 22 terror attack in Pahalgam and reflects serious safety precautions ahead of the yatra, scheduled from July 3 to August 9.
The Shri Amarnathji Shrine Board (SASB) announced the suspension on June 18, following directives from the Union Home Ministry and the Delhi-appointed Lt. Governor. Pilgrims will have to complete the journey to the cave shrine on foot or via traditional means such as ponies or palkis, beginning at either the Pahalgam or Baltal base camps. This marks the first time helicopter lifts have been removed entirely from the pilgrimage logistics.
This security-driven decision includes prohibition of all aerial movements—including drones and balloons—along the pilgrimage routes between July 1 and August 10. Exceptions will apply only for emergency evacuations, surveillance operations, and disaster response, under strict SOPs to be issued soon.

Typically, helicopter services provided critical support, especially to elderly or physically challenged pilgrims, ferrying them from Panchtarni to the cave. Known for its high altitude and rugged paths, Panchtarni often served as the last air-accessible point, requiring a subsequent 6 km trek to the cave. Without choppers, many devotees with mobility issues will depend entirely on manual or animal-assisted means.
This year marks heightened tension, with the Pahalgam attack claiming 25 lives, prompting authorities to significantly tighten security. More than 580 central paramilitary companies have been deployed along both access routes, with layered barricades, rigorous ID checks, and video surveillance ensuring pilgrim safety.
Shahbaz Mir, a 65-year-old pilgrim from Uttar Pradesh, shared his concerns: “Walking 14 km through rugged terrain without support is daunting, but I understand it’s necessary for everyone’s safety.” Many pilgrims welcome the stricter oversight, believing it will prevent further security lapses.
In previous versions of the yatra, helicopter services offered respite for two-thirds of pilgrims, with those unable to endure the trek relying heavily on air transport. Authorities, however, assert this year's focus is on collective safety, even if it imposes hardship on physically challenged devotees.
Authorities are also stepping up on-ground preparedness with mobile medical units, pandals, and enhanced weather monitoring. They urge all pilgrims to begin early, remain hydrated, and strictly comply with security protocols.
This no-fly move is a first in Amarnath shrine history and underlines an unyielding security posture reactive to regional terrorism and geopolitical volatility. It reaffirms India’s priority on pilgrimage safety amid growing internal and cross-border threats.
