Alibaba Unveils Qwen3-Max, China’s Largest AI Model

Beijing, September 24, 2025 – Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba on Wednesday announced its most powerful artificial intelligence (AI) language model, Qwen3-Max, signaling a major push to make AI a core business focus. The model contains more than 1 trillion parameters and demonstrates strong capabilities in code generation and autonomous agent operations.

Autonomous agents allow the AI to act and make decisions independently toward goals set by users, requiring fewer human prompts than traditional chatbots such as ChatGPT, Alibaba Cloud CTO Zhou Jingren explained at the company’s annual conference.

Alibaba cited third-party benchmarks, including Tau2-Bench, noting that Qwen3-Max outperformed competing models like Anthropic’s Claude and DeepSeek-V3.1 in specific metrics.

Earlier this year, Alibaba announced plans to invest 380 billion yuan ($53.4 billion) in AI-related infrastructure over the next three years, highlighting the growing competition among Chinese tech firms to develop advanced AI capabilities.

During Wednesday’s conference, Alibaba CEO Eddie Wu said the company would increase its AI spending further, without specifying an exact amount. “The speed of AI industry development has far exceeded our expectations, and the industry’s demand for AI infrastructure has also far exceeded our expectations,” Wu said.

The Qwen 3 model was initially released in April 2025. Alongside Qwen3-Max, Alibaba also introduced Qwen3-Omni, a multimodal AI system designed for immersive applications, including smart glasses, virtual reality, and intelligent cockpit systems.

Alibaba’s move underlines the company’s strategy to prioritize AI alongside its traditional e-commerce operations and positions it at the forefront of China’s rapidly growing AI sector.
