US leads Libya Senior Officials Meeting at UNGA in New York

The United States chaired the Libya Senior Officials Meeting on the sidelines of the 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The meeting brought together senior officials from the UAE, Egypt, France, Germany, Italy, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Türkiye, and the United Kingdom to discuss ways of supporting Libya’s security, unity, and economic foundations.

Hanna Tetteh, UN Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), briefed participants on the latest developments and efforts to advance Libya’s political roadmap and foster inclusive dialogue among Libyan parties.

In a statement at the conclusion, the US reaffirmed international commitment to Libya’s stability and welcomed progress in integrating security between the country’s east and west. The chair also noted that adjustments to the UN arms embargo in 2025 have allowed initial joint training and technical cooperation.

Discussions highlighted the importance of strengthening Libya’s independent institutions, including the National Oil Corporation, Central Bank, and Audit Bureau, to ensure economic stability and attract investment.

Participants agreed that unified political institutions and stronger economic foundations are essential for Libya to defend its sovereignty, protect its borders, and prevent threats such as illegal migration and arms trafficking.
