Perplexity Launches Comet AI Browser in India

Bengaluru: Perplexity AI has launched its Comet AI browser in India, targeting the country’s vast internet user base outside China. The browser is currently available for Perplexity Pro subscribers on Windows and macOS, with Android pre-orders open and iOS support expected later.

Built on Chromium—the same open-source framework that powers Chrome and Microsoft Edge—Comet is designed as an AI-first browsing experience. It offers features such as shopping on behalf of users, scheduling meetings, summarizing research, comparing prices, drafting emails, and completing transactions when authorized.

Perplexity co-founder and CEO Aravind Srinivas described Comet as a shift from “browsing to thinking,” positioning it as a thinking partner rather than a passive tool. The browser stores browsing history and AI interactions locally with end-to-end encryption and includes integrations with password managers. Enterprise-focused features such as admin controls and compliance measures are also part of the package.

The launch in India comes as part of an early push into the world’s second-largest internet market. Perplexity has partnered with Bharti Airtel Ltd., offering millions of Airtel customers complimentary access to Perplexity Pro for one year. The company is also planning local hiring to strengthen its presence.

Perplexity aims to reduce tab clutter and maintain context across tasks and projects, unlike traditional browsers that handle isolated pages. However, questions remain on how regulators and publishers will respond to a browser that summarizes and acts across the open web, and whether competitors like Google and Microsoft will adopt similar AI-assisted features.
