Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Yammahi, President of the Arab Parliament, strongly condemned the Israeli Knesset’s recent approval of two draft laws aimed at imposing what Israel terms “sovereignty” over the West Bank and one of its illegal settlements. Al Yammahi described these actions as a direct violation of international law and a serious threat to regional peace. The Arab Parliament expressed its firm opposition to any attempt to annex Palestinian territories by legislative means.
In his statement, Al Yammahi highlighted that the draft laws constitute a legislative crime and a blatant aggression against established international law, including UN Security Council Resolution 2334, which declares Israeli settlements in occupied territories illegal. He emphasized that these actions undermine decades of international consensus on Palestinian rights and represent an aggressive attempt to forcibly annex Palestinian lands, putting any peace efforts in the region at risk.
The Arab Parliament President warned that such unilateral moves endanger the prospects for a peaceful resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. By imposing sovereignty over occupied territories, Israel is effectively destroying any remaining opportunities for negotiation and dialogue. Al Yammahi stressed that sustainable peace can only be achieved through respect for international law, justice, and the protection of Palestinian rights, not through illegal annexation.
Al Yammahi criticized the international community’s silence on this matter, warning that inaction may encourage Israel to continue expanding settlements and violating international norms. He urged governments, parliaments, and global organizations to take immediate and decisive action to halt this legislative aggression. He stressed the need for coordinated diplomatic measures to prevent further escalation and to protect the rights of the Palestinian people.
Reiterating a previous call, Al Yammahi urged that the Israeli Knesset’s membership in the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) be suspended due to repeated violations of international law and human rights principles. He noted that allowing Israel to remain a member while passing such laws undermines the credibility of international parliamentary institutions and sends the wrong message regarding accountability and justice.
Al Yammahi reaffirmed the Arab Parliament’s unwavering support for Palestinian sovereignty and the establishment of an independent Palestinian state with East Jerusalem as its capital. He emphasized that the Parliament will continue defending Palestinian rights in all international platforms and will coordinate with Arab and regional partners to confront violations of international law.
The Arab Parliament President concluded by stressing that the global and regional communities must act urgently to challenge Israel’s illegal actions. He called for a unified stance by Arab parliaments and international organizations to reverse these measures, uphold international law, and safeguard the peace process. Al Yammahi’s statement highlights the Arab Parliament’s commitment to justice, accountability, and the protection of Palestinian rights.
