Archaeological Discoveries in Ajman
Ajman, the smallest emirate in the UAE, has a rich history marked by significant archaeological discoveries. These findings provide a glimpse into the emirate’s ancient past and highlight its importance in regional trade and culture.
Mowaihat Archaeological Site
Discovered in 1986, the Mowaihat site is one of Ajman's most important archaeological locations. It was accidentally uncovered during sewer construction, revealing an ancient burial site from the Umm Al Nar period (approximately 2500-2000 BCE). The site included circular tombs, pottery, and copper artifacts, showcasing the advanced craftsmanship of the era. Over 3,000 beads, various ceramic vessels, and human skeletal remains were found, indicating a well-established community engaged in complex burial practices (Visit Ajman) (Trawell.in).
Al Dur Archaeological Site
Al Dur, also known as Ed-Dur, is another significant site located in Ajman. It is one of the largest pre-Islamic sites in the UAE, covering an area of around 5 square kilometers. Excavations began in 1973 and have continued to uncover evidence of human habitation from the Ubeid period (approximately 6500-3800 BCE) through to the Iron Age and the Pre-Islamic period. The site includes residential buildings, a square fort with round towers, and a temple believed to be dedicated to the sun god, indicating the presence of complex religious practices. Over 500 tombs have been excavated, with grave goods including Roman glass, weaponry, and ivory objects (Trawell.in) (Rayna Tours Blog).
Cultural Significance
These archaeological sites in Ajman not only provide insights into ancient life but also underscore the emirate's role in regional trade networks. The artifacts discovered suggest extensive trading links with civilizations across the Arabian Peninsula and beyond. The pottery styles, burial goods, and architectural features indicate cultural exchanges and influences from neighboring regions.
Ajman Museum
Many of the artifacts from these sites are housed in the Ajman Museum, which is located in an 18th-century fort. The museum offers visitors a chance to see these historical treasures up close and learn more about Ajman’s archaeological heritage. The exhibits include tools, pottery, jewelry, and traditional weapons, providing a comprehensive overview of the emirate's history from ancient times to the present (Visit Ajman).
Conclusion The archaeological discoveries in Ajman are invaluable in understanding the region’s history and cultural evolution. Sites like Mowaihat and Al Dur reveal the emirate's significance in ancient trade networks and its complex societal structures. These findings not only enrich our knowledge of Ajman but also contribute to the broader narrative of human history in the Arabian Peninsula.
