A powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan around midnight local time, leaving behind a trail of death, destruction, and despair. Authorities confirmed that more than 800 people lost their lives, while at least 2,800 others were injured. The earthquake, measuring magnitude 6 and striking at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), caused massive damage, especially in remote and mountainous regions, making rescue operations extremely difficult.
Severe Damage in Kunar and Nangarhar Provinces
The worst-affected areas are the eastern provinces of Kunar and Nangarhar, where many mudbrick homes collapsed under the force of the quake. Government spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid reported that at least 610 people were killed in Kunar, and 12 deaths were confirmed in Nangarhar. The earthquake destroyed entire villages, leaving thousands homeless and vulnerable to harsh weather conditions. In Kunar alone, three villages were completely razed, while many other areas suffered substantial structural damage.

The earthquake’s impact was particularly severe in villages along the steep mountainous slopes near the Pakistani border. The residents in these regions mostly live in small mudbrick homes, which were not strong enough to withstand the tremor. As a result, numerous houses collapsed, trapping families under rubble. In some areas, mobile networks have been completely cut off, making communication and coordination of rescue efforts extremely challenging.
Challenges in Rescue Operations
Rescue teams face enormous difficulties in reaching the affected regions due to rough terrain and inclement weather. The mountainous landscapes are hard to navigate, and heavy rain and winds have slowed down the relief operations. Many roads connecting the villages are either blocked or damaged, further delaying assistance. Local authorities and international aid groups are working tirelessly to reach survivors, but progress has been slow because of these geographical and climatic obstacles.
Sharafat Zaman, a spokesperson for the health ministry in Kabul, emphasized the urgent need for international aid. He said, “We need it because here lots of people lost their lives and houses.” Medical teams are struggling to provide immediate treatment for the injured, as local hospitals are overwhelmed with casualties. Many people in remote villages have no access to basic medical facilities, clean water, or food, making humanitarian assistance critical in the coming days.
International Aid and Support
The Afghan government has appealed for international assistance to help manage the disaster. Countries and global humanitarian organizations are being urged to provide medical supplies, food, water, temporary shelters, and rescue equipment. Aid agencies are preparing to send teams to assist with search and rescue operations and to help the survivors who have been displaced by the earthquake.
International organizations have experience in responding to disasters in remote and mountainous regions, and their support is expected to play a crucial role in reducing further loss of life. However, access to the hardest-hit areas remains a challenge, and authorities are urging helicopters and specialized rescue equipment to be deployed as quickly as possible.
Human Impact and Stories from the Ground
The earthquake has left families devastated. Many survivors have lost their loved ones, homes, and personal belongings. People are now forced to live in makeshift tents and temporary shelters, exposed to cold nights and heavy rains. Local leaders describe the scene as “heartbreaking,” with children and elderly among the most vulnerable.
Villagers recounted the terrifying moments when the earthquake struck. The ground shook violently, and the walls of their homes collapsed instantly. Some people managed to escape, but many were trapped under the debris. Rescue teams continue to dig through the rubble in search of survivors, but the risk of aftershocks and landslides remains high in the mountainous terrain.
Long-Term Consequences
Beyond the immediate destruction, the earthquake is likely to have long-term consequences for the affected regions. Thousands of families are now homeless, and basic infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, and roads have been severely damaged. Agriculture, the primary source of livelihood for many in Kunar and Nangarhar, has also been affected, as fields and irrigation systems were destroyed by landslides triggered by the quake.
Experts warn that without rapid international support, the affected communities may face severe food shortages, disease outbreaks, and prolonged displacement. Efforts to rebuild homes and restore essential services could take months, if not years, given the scale of the devastation and the remote location of the affected villages.
The Need for Preparedness and Awareness
The earthquake in Afghanistan highlights the importance of disaster preparedness in regions prone to seismic activity. Local authorities and communities are being urged to develop early warning systems, earthquake-resistant housing, and emergency response plans. Public awareness about how to respond during earthquakes can save lives and minimize injuries in the future.
The earthquake that struck eastern Afghanistan is one of the deadliest in recent years, causing immense human suffering and extensive damage. With over 800 confirmed deaths, thousands injured, and entire villages destroyed, the need for urgent humanitarian aid has never been greater. Rescue operations continue despite difficult conditions, and international support is essential to provide relief, medical care, and shelter to the survivors.
The road to recovery will be long and challenging for the people of Kunar, Nangarhar, and surrounding areas. In the face of this tragedy, solidarity, swift action, and compassion are crucial to help rebuild lives and communities shattered by nature’s fury.
