The Department of Municipalities and Transport (DMT) has successfully secured the bid to host the 2025 Executive Committee Meeting (EXCOM 2025) of the World Smart Sustainable Cities Organisation (WeGO). This significant achievement marks a historic milestone for Abu Dhabi, making it the first city in the Middle East to host this high-level annual event focused on smart and sustainable city initiatives.
WeGO’s Executive Committee Meeting is a prestigious global event that provides an opportunity for its members to review their accomplishments, outline strategic plans, and chart the future course of the organization. The conference creates an open platform for discussions, with input from observers representing local governments, international institutions, and various stakeholders. The 2025 edition of EXCOM will bring together an impressive array of global leaders, including governors, mayors, and chief information officers (CIOs), alongside experts from the public and private sectors, academia, and smart city specialists. The conference will not only celebrate the progress made in e-governance and smart city advancements but also provide a platform for knowledge exchange, sharing best practices, and forging collaborations that could define the future of urban living.
His Excellency Mohamed Ali Al Shorafa, Chairman of DMT, expressed his pride in Abu Dhabi's success in securing the hosting rights for such an important event. In his remarks, he highlighted the significance of the achievement, saying, “Hosting this event is a testament to our continuous efforts and dedication to positioning Abu Dhabi as a world leader in urban development, smart technologies, and sustainability. We are honoured that Abu Dhabi is the first city in the Middle East to host this unique event, where we will welcome global leaders to the emirate, showcase our latest initiatives, and gain insights from international and regional experts. We look forward to building strategic partnerships that advance urban progress and foster a more innovative and sustainable future.”
The decision to hold EXCOM 2025 in Abu Dhabi follows the DMT’s successful participation in EXCOM 2024, held in Almaty, Kazakhstan. During the event in Kazakhstan, a senior delegation from Abu Dhabi showcased the city’s significant strides in smart city advancements and engaged in critical discussions on sustainable urban development. The success in Almaty demonstrated Abu Dhabi's growing role as a leader in smart urban solutions and paved the way for it to host the next edition of the prestigious gathering.
The hosting of EXCOM 2025 in Abu Dhabi will serve as an opportunity for the emirate to showcase its pioneering work in the fields of smart technologies, urban planning, and sustainability. It will also reinforce Abu Dhabi's standing on the global stage as a forward-thinking city committed to creating a sustainable, tech-driven future.
This landmark event is set to not only highlight Abu Dhabi's accomplishments but also facilitate new collaborations and strategic partnerships, enabling cities around the world to learn from each other and tackle the shared challenges of urbanization, climate change, and digital transformation. Through EXCOM 2025, Abu Dhabi aims to contribute to the global dialogue on building smarter, more sustainable cities that meet the needs of future generations.
